While pre-operative smoking a significant risk factor for surgery due to its degenerative effects on the vertebral column it is not as well-documented a risk for nonunion as post-operative smoking. Its no secret that smoking is bad for you but smoking prior to surgery can be deadly.

Having an operation is a good reason to quit smoking.
